Match report 9 man Bengeo secure a much needed 2nd league win of the season away to Division 3 table toppers Hatfield Heath.

Heavy rain in East Herts put Saturdays game in doubt, following the previous week's wash out Bengeo were keen to battle for more points.

Skipper Dellow's absence on golf tour with reserve keeper Weeb, Underdown still sidelined through injury and Baker's non availability, meant Bengeo would agin be struggling for numbers. Mike's mate James stepped into the breach midweek, only to step out on Saturday morning for a no show.

The guys meeting in Bengeo were surprised we'd not had a call regarding the weather & a late running Griffin called to check we were still on.

On arrival at "the heath" the away team were surprised by the pitch conditions, they must have had a micro climate in the last 24 hours as the wicket was in surprising good nick.

Vice skipper Dowling lost the toss & Bengeo were put into bat.

Ruskin and Bateman to open, looking to build on the understanding they'd built at Abridge 2 weeks previous. Unfortunately the oppertunity was going to be a long one; Ruskin out for 2 bowled off his pads.

Robinson in at threee, not been around for a few weeks (since the crunching home defeat to Mole Hill Green), but gratefully welcomed back intot he fold. Robbo quickly got into his rhythm hitting some thumping boundaries.

Next wicket to fall was Bateman, although some confusion surrounded the dismissal. Neither umpire was sure the ball carried to the home fielder, so you would think the batsman would remain? However the home umpire asked the fielder if he though he'd caught it? only for the unsurprising reply to be; yes I got a finger under it! An unlucky Bateman reluctantly departed a little harshly.

Sharpe to the crease, similar to Ruskin & Bateman, Sharpe had looked confident at Abridge and again he showed his strength at the crease.

The rain finally came and with a 30 second return to the field (only to scurry back to the pavillion), 21 minutes were lost and the game reduced to 42 overs per side.

Robinson pushed on with some massive strokes not just peppering the road that cut accross the out field, but also the cars on the main road well beyond the boundary.

Quickly past 50 Robinson continued to score well, as did Sharpe. The home side may have used up all their luck on the previous dismissal as nothing was going their way. Sharpe also past 50 Bengeo were progressing towards a respectable total.

Possibly knowing how close he was getting to his ton, Robinson slowed down, this also saw the Heath 4th change bowled coming on & tying the Bengeo pair up somewhat.

Eventually Robinson passed the 100 mark, earning himself the "Medcalf" 100 cup for another season, this released a bit of freedom for the final few overs.

42 overs up, 215 for 2, Hatfield Heath would need 5 an over from their 42 to win the game.

As always a fantastic spread for tea, however a new topic of conversation (in comparison to other seasons), was the Heath tea as good as Abridge (no one else normally comes close!).

Skipper Dowling wanted to take the pace off the ball (but also knowing Guy would be leaving @ 6 for an evening of comedy) opened with himself & the tungsten tosser; Guy.

Bengeo would get early reward with 3 wickets in the 1st 10 overs, but as Heath had strength in depth this just brought another capeble batsman to the crease.

Bateman was proving to have more luck fielding than he had batting with some excellent catches in the early overs.

However as Guy left the field with 24 overs still to play, Heath took the upper hand. Despite only having 9 on the field now, Bengeo kept their heads up (as they did at Abridge, when they also only had 9) and didn't let the home side get too far in front of the run rate.

With oppertunites given to Griffin, Adamson and Bateman follwing the departure of Guy into wasn't until the introduction of Ruskin that the balance of the game changed.

It was "safe hands" Bateman again taking a difficult catch in the deep dismissing the confident home batsman who looked like he would take them home.

Not only did this turn the game Bengeo's way, but it also meant one of the home side's lower order batsman had to to put his whites back on after a premature shower.

Still battling the Heath tails continued to wag & with the last two batsman at the crease, consecutive loose overs from Bateman and Ruskin saw the game slip out of Bengeo's hands.

Vice captain Dowling brought himself back & secured the last wicket & a deserved 2nd win (both away) of the season for Bengeo by 15 runs with 2 overs to spare.

Another treat which away teams look forward to was over the road in the pub; sausage & chips and some friendly barstaff.

Next week Home to Ardley in the basement battle, hopefully we'll have 11!
