Hatfield Heath v Bengeo Cricket Club Bengeo CC 1st XI on Sat 02 Jun 2012 at 13.30
Bengeo Cricket Club Lost By 2 Wickets

Match report HECL week 5, poor weather and lack of players put Bengeo's 3rd League game of the season in doubt. Skipper Dowling was missing for the 2nd week at another wedding, also missing were; Bateman, Walker Jnr, Baker, Sharp and Sharp.
Stand in skipper Dellow had all on to get 11 players together, thanks to Guy (back from early retirement), Robinson (returning after an eploratory season at Bayford) and the two Lawrences; dad Jim (Bengeo legend) and son Max (senior debut & always has too much to say) Bengeo scraped 11 together.
Dellow lost the toss and was put into bat.
Hatfield Heath for those who don't know have a road bisecting their outfield, which Bengeo have never got used to playing (and don't particularly want to). This road is not closed on match days & quite often you will find yourself fielding the ball, but not being able to see the bowler or wicket keeper as the car driving past is in the way.
Bengeo batting 1st; Dellow & Underdown to open. However no sooner had Dellow walked to the wicket, taken his guard, he was returning to the clubhouse with his tail firmly between his legs. The stand in skipper was out 2nd ball.
Robinson joined Underdown at the wicket, Robinson's team mates remembered only to well the crucial part he played just 2 seasons earlier, they'd scraped together without him, but were glad he was back. Underdown was playing himself in sensibly and Robinson soon started picking his shots.
WICKET, Underdown had done the hard work, but then got himself in a tangle and missed a straight one: Bengeo were two down.
Seeley running late had just arrived to see the second wicket fall, although was assured seeing Lawrence Snr stride out to the wicket (this did take some time as Lawrence Snr's strides are not that big).
Robinson and Lawrence soon started scoring freely, finding the boundary and running quick singles (even though Robinson took 1/2 as many strides as Lawrence).
Fifty up for Bengeo, the away side were looking more comfortable than after the two early wickets, but very soon this would change. Lawrence was next out caught, soon followed by Robinson, not until he'd reached his half century. Robinson with 66 and Lawrence Snr 19 had steadied the Bengeo ship.
Ruskin and Fleming were now at the crease and had to scratch away for any runs they could get. That was until the home side made a tactical bowling change, although the tactics seemed to work in Bengeo's favour. Ruskin biffed one maximum, before two more, which left his teammates scurrying around protecting the cars, as it seemed inevitable he would hit one. However this free scoring seemed to be Bengeo's undoing. Again two Bengeo wickets would fall in quick sucsession, first Ruskin the Fleming, both caught.
Walker Snr to the crease 1st, promoted above Seeley due to lateness (Seeley) and requirement to umpire, then Seeley to replace Fleming.
Bengeo had reached 150 with a handful of overs to go, but runs were proving hard to get. Seeley & Walker were trying their hardest, but potentially too hard when Walker was run out, easy 3 for Seeley, but Walker was inches short (possibly because he didn't have his bat down).
Young Max Lawrence in at 9 on senior debut, skipper Dellow umpiring attempted to give the youngster advice & give the strike to Seeley, the confident young man was having done of it. He was soon off the mark, outscoring the skipper and telling him about it, also letting Seeley know when he was running and when he wasn't.
Despite the home side bowling tightly at the end Bengeo crept along, scoring the odd boundary from Seeley, but predominantly in quick singles.
Lawrence Jnr was soon sent packing scoring 3 vital runs, Guy replaced him, lasting about an over scoring a solitary run, but again running with Seeley when needed.
Griffin came in for the last ball of the Bengeo innings, no duck, but scampered a leg bye. 171 runs for Bengeo was going to make a game of it but would it be enough?
Another fantastic away tea (as always at Hatfield Heath) for the 2nd consecutive game. Probably one too many scones for the away side. The only other destraction at the interval was a curvaceous young lady in her running gear, which left little to the imagination!!!
Bengeo in the field to protect the probably fragile 171, stand in skipper Dellow was going to struggle for bowling today, but was comfortable in opening with Ruskin and Walker Snr.
Ruskin must have had one too many of the scones at tea, as immediately it was apparent he was out of sorts. However, Walker got straight into his stride at the other end. But it wasn't just Walker getting into his stride as the home side's openers were setting to work at chasing down their target.
Ruskin was soon replaced by Griffin (still struggling with water retention), who like Ruskin was struggling for the "road in the middle of the outfield" end.
So much so Dellow had to turn to Guy, Robinson also replaced Walker. Robinson and Guy both looked more comfortable than had Griffin and Ruskin. Both bowlers would be rewarded; Robinson with two wickets, Guy with five maidens and a wicket.
The home side had been pegged back, after scoring 5&1/2 an over for the 1st fifteen, with Guy's economy they were now looking frustrated.
Ruskin return to the attack in place of Robinson and further success came for the away side, 6 wickets were now down and the home side were starting to struggle, the game had finally started to swing in favour of Bengeo. The home side needed 40 with 10 overs remaining, with 4 wickets left.
However Bengeo probably took one too many wickets (but how), heath veteran Briscow came to the wicket, not sure if it was the maturity of the player or the home side's 1st left handed that flummoxed Bengeo, whichever reason the game turn again. Immediately the veteran started scoring boundaries, so Bengeo protected the rope, only then for the home batsmen to start scampering singles; to Bengeo's frustration.
The game was sitting in the balance; the home side's 8th wicket fell, again this was to prove decisive as their number 10 (who had potentially been held back) scored 3 quick boundaries to win the game. Bengeo's 2nd win still eludes them, although valuable bonus points scored.
Next week new boys; Stanstead Hall & Ellsenham at home (subject to the weather).
