Bengeo Cricket Club Bengeo CC 1st XI v Potter Street I on Sat 11 Jun 2011 at 13.30
Bengeo Cricket Club Won By 25 runs

Match report 2011 season week 7 for Bengeo and desperate to get back to winning ways. Sharpe and Griffin back for the home fixture against the rock bottom team; Potter Street 2nd XI. History tells Bengeo it will be an intewresting afternoon. The wicket covers prove invaluable again as heavy overnight showers could have put the fixture in jeapordy.
Potter Street win the toss and opt to field. Dellow and Mudd Snr to open. The early question posed is; where is the match ball? as Dellow dispatches the fifth ball of the innings, a loose ball to a one bounce four into a St Leonards Rd garden. A trantic search by the Bengeo batsmen does not prove successful until the eight over, by which time Bengeo are 1 down, Mudd caught for two. Ruskin in, full of confidence and Mercury headlines, having had plenty of time at the crease in recent weeks. Crease time was all that was going Bengeo's way in the early encounters, runs were proving hard to come by. Potter Street were going to bowl their openers through, task for Ruskin and Dellow; see them off. Job done 20 overs bowled, Bengeo barely past 50, but crucially 9 wickets in hand. 20 overs passing and the Bengeo pair seemed to switch off, Ruskin 1st; caught chasing a wide one, then Dellow fending one off around his chops that had popped up. Sharpe in with Bateman, Sharpe had missed the last two away defeats and wasn't showing his early season form and very soon caught for 2. Bateman was soon to follow for only 6, Bengeo might miss this pair's contribution! Walker Jnr in with his new weapon of choice, soon joined by Underdown, the home side would need to push the run rate as they were yet to pass three figures with 30 overs bowled. The change came, Bengeo scoring quick singles and boundaries, 140 runs, which had earlier looked improbable, became a certainty, but how many more. Walker had reached 38 well earned runs before one quick single too many and was run out. Seeley in with 6 overs left and the home side hoped for more of the same. The bengeo pair continued in the same vain until Underdown was bowled for a well deserved 24. Walker Snr to join Seeley to see the innings through ending 14 a piece and the team total of 173, not bad at all considering the slow start.
A top home team as usual, somewhat delayed by a Potter Street inquest.
Ruskin and Walker Snr to open the bowling for Bengeo, dark clouds all around, Bengeo will need to stick to the task in hand. Early breakthrough for Bengeo/Ruskin; fortunately Dellow at mid off, as anyone under six feet tall would have had no chance. Catches were to continue as the dismissal method of the day after 5 Bengeo batsmen had fallen this way. Next wicket, same combination, the away side were coming to play their shots. Double change for Bengeo; Bateman and Griffin on. Soon another chance came Bengeo's way, the Potter Street batsman attempting to launch one into orbit, Seeley strode in from deep long on to take it nicely, 3 down but one of the openers remained and seemed to of reconsidered his approach, joined by the number 5 batsman he decided to stick around. This quickly proved to be a good chice as Griffin took the next wicket very cheaply. Bengeo felt the game was moving in their favour, although the required rate of 4 an over was being maintained. However the away team had other plans; the next wicket was not going to come for some time. Catches had all been held op to this point, but when the Potter Street opened drilled one at Seeley at backward square leg, it rersulted in a painful drop. Ruskin rallied the side, Bengeo would not give the aeway side without a fight. Over after over the home side toiled, not many runs were coming, but more crucially no wickets! The wicket eventually came, after a couple of very close calls; a Guy and Sharpe combination, number 6 stumped, but had contributed 20 towards the target. This proved to be the catalyst Bengeo needed, the 2nd 5 wickets fell for barely 20 runs, with scalps for Ruskin, Walker, Griffin and 2 for Guy.
Bengeo did well to protect their target with Potter street falling only 25 runs short. Neither the prolonged showers or frustration of close calls was going to scupper Bengeo. A solid team performance again, and great to see the tail wag!
Away again! next week, not a team we've come accross before, we'll see what High Beach have to offer.
