Bengeo Cricket Club Bengeo CC 1st XI v Cloghams on Sat 21 May 2011 at 13.30
Bengeo Cricket Club Won By 24 Runs

Match report Bengeo entertained longstanding HECL rivals Cloghams on a sunny but blustery May afternoon. Back after 3 weeks on the road Bengeo were keen to get back to winning ways after a narrow defeat the previous week. Cloghams were not going to make it an easy task that was for sure.
Toss won; Bengeo to bat 1st, Dellow and Seeley to open. Second over and Cloghams get their breakthrough, Seeley out for two, a cracking one handed catch in the slips. The away team cheers however were short lived, Ruskin was soon biffing the ball around the rec, boundaries a plenty! Dellow was also helping himself to any loose balls the score quickly passed 50, then 100. The home team were quite happy with how things were going. Ruskin passed the half century mark first, Dellow was soon to follow. Soon after another breakthrough for Cloghams, Ruskin caught for 62, a cracking knock to put Bengeo on the way. Sharpe in at four, in good nick the previous couple of weeks, but out for one. Bateman to the crease, similar to Sharpe good innings for Bateman in the last couple of weeks, the Bengeo middle order really showing strength in division three. Bateman looking really comfortable and really complementing Dellow who was now seeing the ball like a football. However comfortable the pair were, Bateman was going to create his own undoing, a pre-empted reverse sweep that had come off every time during winter nets didn't work. Bateman out for 33, C Walker to the crease, could he perform better than his past two league ducks? Full of spending £400 on a new bat (not ready for this week, knocking in required!) confidence wasn't going to be an issue. With an early maximum this was soon evident. Dellow soon entered the nervous nineties, going for a maximum when on 94, a bit more strength would have seen the ball over the hedge, but it still took a great catch to dismiss the Bengeo skipper. 5 down and that was how it would stay, Mudd and Walker saw Bengeo to 230. The loss off only 5 wickets may prove crucial if Bengeo were to go back to the top of the league.

A grade A+ home team and Bengeo were fully fueled and focused on the job in hand. 5 an over was going to be a tall order for the away side, Ruskin and M Walker to open the bowling for Bengeo. A steady start for the away side with no early chances, Bengeo were going to need to take anything coming their way. The first wicket came for Walker, an absolutely blinding catch by Guy in the gully, the batsman was hoping to see the ball race away for four runs but Guy's first involvement in the game (except for an upiring stint & tea making assistance) was going to be crucial. However we knew all to well how strong Cloghams' batting line up is and they will keep sending them in until the end. Crouchman to the crease, one of the away team's most reliable players, change of bowling for Bengeo; Bateman on for Ruskin. The change was going to pay off, Crouchman being dismissed before he got to double figures. However the dismissal brought in the explosive Bardell, who was capable of damaging any teams hopes, the home side would need to stick at it and be patient. Second ball despatched for six well over New Road, soon after another into a St'Leonards' Road garden. Walker finished his spell a cracking 1-31, a good decision to keep him bowling and keep the required run rate up at around 6 an over now. Griffin on for Walker at the St'Leonards Road end and immeadiately the ball was swinging all over the place, but Bardell continued to launch the ball to all corners. Griffin hadn't experianced Bardell before and reassurance was given to him that we'd seen it all before and that he wasn't invinciable. A few fielding errors crept in under the onslaught, but the required run rate was not coming down. Break through for Griffin; Bardell bowled for 54, a crucial wicket, would his contribution be enough? Soon after the Cloghams remaining opener fell, to Griffin again, just shy of his half century, the game was edging Bengeo's way. As said before the Cloghams tail will wag, and they were not going to forfeit their unbeaten start to the season without a fight. A further two wickets fell to Griffin, strong fielding and match changing catches enforced Bengeo's upper hand. A comical run out also went in the home side's favour. The run rate started now to creap up; 7 an over, then 8, 2 boundaries an over was proving more difficult for the Cloghams lower order as Bengeo began to tighten the screw. A fifth wicket for Griffin as he finished his spell with 5-44, a fantastic effort in his second game for the club. We look forward to seeing more of the left arm over bowler as the season progresses. Three batsmen left, but wickets for Bateman and Guy wrapped things up. A stumping for Sharpe off Bateman capped another top afternoon behind the stumps for Sharpe despite taking a couple of nasty blows on the fingers tips (good job we had a dish cloth handy!) 24 off the last over was too bigger ask and the game was concluded with 5 balls remaining. Bengeo return to winning ways and back to the top of the league (on alphabetical order). Hatfield Heath High Street next week, hopefully we can get a side, with so many players taking advantage of the bank holiday weekend or supporting Stevanage's crusade into Division One of the Football league!
