Woodford Wells IV v Bengeo Cricket Club Bengeo CC 1st XI on Sat 14 May 2011 at 13.30
Bengeo Cricket Club Lost By 4 Wickets

Match report Week 3 of the 2011 season and a 3rd forray into Essex for Bengeo. 12 o'clock meet at Bengeo, after a breif catch up with the Trinty 2nd team, finally departed about 1/2 past. Mike was moaning about how slow his hire car was (not as slow as Nixie between the wickets though) & said he would meet us there. Destination Woodford via Epping, unfortunatley due to Matt's crap-nav we missed the turn, arriving via a detour at their ground at 5 past 1!
Del won the toss at last, and decided to bat, didn't recognise any of their players from our last encounter a few years ago, let's see what they've got. Big Red opened from the tennis court end, quite pacey in his 1st over, Del was happy to survive. O'Neill opened from the houses, a little eratic, Matt saw off the 2nd over. The same continued until Del got his eye in, a couple of boundaries & a quick single after a mis-field which was going to prove fatal to Matt. 1st ball from Big Red and the off stump went cartwheeling out of the ground, bit of a corker but Bengeo were one down & barely into double figures. In came Ruskin, Del had kept the top 6 batting order the same for the 3rd game in a row. Not much trouble for the scorer 4 and out for Ruskin, Sharpe in. After the best part of a year out Mike was starting to show he hadn't lost it in the 1st 2 games could he continue in this vain? The Bengeo middle order were hoping so, but it wasn't going to be a big partnership with Dellow. 3 down and the ever reliable Bateman to the crease, although it was going to be a change in umpiring which was going to be Bengeo's undoing. Karl-newplayer umpiring in his 1st league game had to give what he saw, which was Bateman out LBW, before he'd hardly started (no 3rd umpire to judge if there was a bit of bat there). Bengeo were struggling with just about 20 overs gone. C Walker, in and out in a flash, quite literly, one big swing, caught, 2nd duck in a row, this time golden. Mudd in, could he follow on from his trophy winning ton from the previous Sunday? He started to look good before getting out. Change of role for Karl-newplayer umpiring to batting, similarly looked good to start, but soon caught. Bengeo 7 down, fortunately Sharpe was still at the crease, fighting hard to keep the innings together & quite deservedly passed 50, 1 highlight from the afternoon. Next man in Dale-newplayer, a freind of the Chairman who had impressed in the nets (with the ball) but didn't like batting. Openly admitting feeling sick before walking out, his innings wasn't going to last long and after a big swing (John Wright esc) the stumps were down, 2nd duck of the afternoon, Bengeo 8 down. Sharpe still at the crease, joined by club veteran M Walker. As always Walker started sensibly no risks & the score was ticking along, 200 would be nice, but was going to be difficult when Sharpe fell. Last man Guy, this brught back the Wells opening bowler Big Red, surely Walker could see him off, despite his number 10 spot, we know he is more than capeable. The rest of the team on the boundary were stunned when off the 1st ball of Red's last over Walker took a single, team suicide? NO, Guy quite competently saw off the next 5 balls, Red finished could Bengeo make the best of the last couple of overs. Again NO, Walker 1st sent Guy back after calling 1, then said yes when the ball was mis-fielded, Guy didn't know which way he was going, the innings ending in debacle, Guy run out for a duck! 192 was going to be hard to protect especially with the Wells lightning out field. One scant consolation the home 1st XI were chasing nearly 300 to win on the big pitch!

A quick tea, last 15 minutes of the FA Cup Final and the game resumed. Bengeo seemed subdued and no matter how hard skipper Dellow tried to raise it Bengeo remained flat. Ruskin and Walker to open, Wells looked confident and quickly got into their stride, no chances for Bengeo until an arial shot to mid-off, Dale-newplayer seemed to loose it in the trees, oppertunity missed. Bengeo fortunes changed, Guy stingy with his over, Dale-newplayer soon into his stride, but it would be good catches by C Walker & Karl-newplayer and the game was in the balance. Bengeo tightened the run rate 80 needed off 20 overs and 5 wickets down, the next passage of play was going to be crucial. The Bengeo bowling seemed to ebb between good tight overs and better ones for the home side. 11 runs off 2 overs were needed in the end, Bengeo were not going to get 4 wickets in 12 balls so protecting the boundries was the requirement. It wasn't going to happen & as an anticlimax the game was won off a wide with 4 deliveries remaining.
Bengeo's 1st defeat of the season, dropping down from 1st to 3rd in the league. Not all lost; Sharpe in good shape, strong hands in the field and 2 promising new sign ups. Back to Bengeo next week, top of the table Cloghams our old advasaries.
