Hitchin CC v Bengeo Cricket Club Bengeo CC Sunday XI on Sun 25 Apr 2010 at 1.30pm
Match was Abandoned - no play after tea due to rain

Match report After a sunny April week and a very hot day on Saturday, Sunday's game of cricket couldn't come soon enough; away to Hitchin. A new fixture in the calendar for Bengeo, and one to be proud of.

However at 1:20, ten minutes before we were due to start Bengeo had 6 players!!! Not a great start to the afternoon, would it have been better if the morning showers had stuck around? Not sure where everyone was? 2nd week into the season had the novelty already worn off? The start of the league fixtures only a week away, surely we're not too good to need a bit of practice? Was it the sight of lycra clad girls pounding the streets of London, or a few hours of work can't be turned down these days? Anyway we were going to play and after plenty of negotiation by AD with the home skipper we were up to 9.

Up to 9 but still no wicket keeper; debut for Mark Lodge with the gloves and he opted for no box. Whilst the bowler would need navy accuracy radar to hit the target and do damage, refusal of protective equipment had to be short sighted.

Dowling to open, M Lodge on his toes an the other 7 fielders ready for some hard work. Walker was the first to stike, the opener gone for 5. Dowling only struck our debutant wicket keeper, box or no box, Mark took one bravely in the chest. Dowling and Walker continued to plug away, Hitchin were actually finding it hard to push up the run rate, 3 an over and with whiley bowling from Walker by the time 16 overs were up (on the very impressive electronic score board) Hitchin were 4 down. The afternoon wasn't looking so bad.

One of the fielders supplied by Hitchin caught his team mate out (he had to do something as he threw his wicket away) & another took a wicket (before he ran in to put his pads on). First change Guy bowled steady as usual and chipped in with 2 timely wickets.

28 of the 40 overs down and the job seemed to get harder. The stubborn opener who had stuck around decided to up the tempo and the home batsmen who joined him at the crease seemed keen to get in on the action. Another bowling change saw A Lodge join in. However, Hitchin took a liking to his bowling and his 4 overs were despatched fr 45 runs.

The last few overs dragged by, the home 8 & 9 batsmen put on 75 runs and would have looked comfortable well up the order. Innings total; 244 for 7, getting the target was going to be a bit of an ask for Bengeo, even without the problem of only 9 players.

During tea (not bad spread, probably an 8 out of 10), the black clouds appeared, but it wasn't until the Bengeo opening pair of Seeley & Johnno (kindly donated by Hitchin) were reading to start the innings that the Heavens opened. Within minutes the wicket had puddles. Before too long it was apparent that continuing the game was unlikely. Match abandoned, game drawn. A good work out for the Bengeo 6, Walker in the wickets, Guy & Dowling also finding their line.

The important stuff starts next week, but who's going to be around. Saturday football still hasn't finished, rumours of players leaving for pastures old.

Team selection may be interesting...........can we get 11!

Molehill Green here we (hopefully 11) come.
