County Hall v Bengeo Cricket Club Bengeo CC Sunday XI on Sun 18 Apr 2010 at 1pm
Bengeo Cricket Club Lost by 26 runs

Match report An unseasonably sunny April Sunday afternoon saw Bengeo start their season in the annual opener away to County Hall. Bengeo pulled their 11 together late on Saturday afternoon & were releived on arrival when Chris Graves was ruled out for the opposition. Despite the fixture being a 1:30 start senior clubmen Ruskin & Dellow arrived at 1:40 (which was not a pretty sight). Dellow was rewarded with the gloves after Skipper Dowling won the toss & elected to field.

A breakthough in the first over for Dowling was the only scalp in the early overs. Veteran Walker bowled well in his 7 over for no return. First change brought on Ruskin & Guy who both kept the run rate down & picked up wickets. Ruskin not known for bowling so early in the season picked up a brace for his efforts, but was obviously tiring from his exursions. After 20 overs of the County Hall innings it was well poised with the home side approaching 100. Further shrewd bowling changes brought on Lancaster & M Lodge. The run rate slowed & further wickets were picked up. Lancaster bowled particularly well & could have felt hard done by when given a blow. Kali came on & bowled a tidy spell. A Lodge & Westgath each had a couple of overs, but County Hall had seised the imputus by this stage, wrapping their inning up @ 184 for 7. Bengeo feilded well, fines only for Dellow & Westgath.

185 off 20 overs the requirement for Bengeo, just shy of 4.5 an over, Skipper Dowling felt the score was acheivable. Openers Seeley & Walker quickly set about the job with early boundries, keeping the score above the required rate. Seeley was to fall first top edging a leg side ball. In came Skipper Dowling after promoting himself up the order. He was not hanging about hitting three sixes in his quick 31 before being bowled (not sure who he was trying to impress?). In came the reliable Dellow, now feeling a little better than when he started the game with the mother of all hangovers. Again Dellow & Walker kept the runs tickling along before Dellow was bowled for 21. The fall of wicket brought in Ruskin, who with some brute force scored a brisk 13 but didn't meet his potential (another one with supporters on a sunny afternoon). After Ruskin's dismissal the only highlight was Walker's well deserved 50. The fines pot then started to fill with ducks for; Westgath, Lancaster, Guy & M Lodge. Another best number 11 performance for A Lodge with 2, leaving Walker unbeaten on 61; a fine innings.

An enjoyable start to the season, long may the sunshine continue. Next stop Hitchin.
