Molehill Green v Bengeo Cricket Club Bengeo CC 1st XI on Sat 01 May 2010 at 1:30pm
Bengeo Cricket Club Won by 233 runs

Match report First league game of the season & the were 2 questions as Saturday approached;

a) would we find 11 players?
b) was the weather forecast accurate as heavy rain was predicted?

Saturday morning came & we had 11 players, heavey rain overnight, but more rain was still forecast. An early meet in Bengeo, Ruskin would be making a detour via harlow to pick up Charan, Potter & Nix were meeting us there. Bateman arrived in a prinstine Escort XR3i, trying to convince Carter he had gone retro. Now that's what I call music 5 would be playing on the casette deck on the way over!
As luck should have it Potter picked up the convey in Standon as we headed towards Molehill Green. When we were nearly there we thought Potter had left something at work as an unexpected detour via the airport was taken; later to be justified as a short cut. We arrived at Molehill Green to find one of the smallest pitches we'd ever played on. Potter looked happy with the short boundries, skipper looked concerned as both Ruskin (and Charan) and Nix were stuck on the M11 as there had been an accident. Fortunately as everyone had met on time we were still 30 minutes from the start. Even so the toss had been lost before all 11 players were present & we were put in.

Bateman & Nix to open, the next 3 of Ruskin, Potter & Seeley all got padded up so this season's vice Potter could gaugue the game at the fall of the 1st wicket.
Nix was the 1st to fall, the slip fielder showing his skills with a bit of juggling before holding on. Due to the early fall Seeley was sent in. A nervous couple of overs only before being bowled for 2. Ruskin next, a couple of bigs hits before being simply dismissed for 12. Potter walked to the crease, there was never going to be a better time for the new slimline Potter to show his worth to Bengeo, with his team in trouble it was time to step upto the plate. A very slow start from the vice skipper, who looked very nervous to begin with despite the short boundaries, singles to begin with. Bateman reached a cool half century, showing his class with some beautiful shots around the ground before being caught in the deep. In came the skipper, 100 runs or so on the board Dowling would need to stick around if we were going to make a game of it as 250 would be a reasonable target. Dowling soon started outscoring Potter with some smart shots, boundaries aplenty with a couple of maximums included. Potter didn't want to be left out & soon joined the party, finding the fence with a barrage of cuts and pull shots!!. The runs were totting up quite nicely. With some expensive bowling from the home team Bengeo passed 200, both players would reach fifty. Within 10 or so overs 300 was passed, Potter and Dowling put on 190 in 19 overs. Soon Dowling would be dismissed a League best for Bengeo of 70, leaving Potter with the task of carrying the total over 300. Potter would win the 1st trophy of the season with classy 109, it wasn't till he got passed 50 that Potter found his true form. Hitting some massive sixes and stroking some brutal off drives that ebbo loved, shouting out 'hammertime' ....... Three quick wickets then fell; Walker for 1, Carter golden & Lancaster golden. Charan survived without scoring & Guy faced one ball taking a quick bye on the last ball of the innings. The skipper was happy with the target set, but made it clear the result could not be taken for granted, also rain was still a threat so key that we get through the overs quickly.

Make your own tea, plenty to keep everone happy, 7.5 out of 10, not a bad spread.

Dowling & Walker to open the bowling, due to the absences of Lawrence, Dellow, Sharp & Walker Jnr Bengeo had no wicket keeper, Guy was muted as replacement, but Ruskin stepped into the breech & boy did he fill it! It would be 1st blood to the skipper, bowling the opener for 2. Walker was soon in the wickets, although Dowling was keen to be very much part of this game taking a catch in the slips. The remaining opener was intent on playing his shots, the run rate of 7 was not being acheived although 4 was being maintained. A second for the skipper as the other opener fell. 1st change, Nix on for Dowling. The home side wanted to play their big shots, without much success, but Bengeo were very much in control. Ruskin snaffelled a catch off Walker and Seeley took a neat catch in the gully also off Walker, 3 wickets for his efforts. Nix also took a swift 3 wickets with a chance of a hatrick included. Lancaster came on for Walker after his 10 overs. Wicket with his second ball, held by Potter in the deep, game over.

Good sart to the season, no rain and a early finish.

Next week away to Braughing, more selection dilemas with Potter stepping in as Dowling away. Hopefully those playing football will be back and no more rain!
