Birchanger CC v Bengeo Cricket Club Bengeo CC 1st XI on Sun 21 Apr 2013 at 13.30
Bengeo Cricket Club Won by 5 wickets

Match report Sunday 21st April saw Bengeo kick off the 2013 Season with a friendly match away to Birchanger.
Only thanks to Ian's perseverance and guest appearances from Vicky, Sam & Tom were Bengeo able to fulfil this fixture.
Predominantly fielding a 2nd X1 strength side Bengeo travelled over the border into Essex, not having played Birchanger for a number of seasons due to differing levels of league success, there was only a couple of the side that had played there before.
Ian stood in for Skipper Paul & vice Adam who were both unavailable & won the toss, Bengeo elected to field.
Adamson & Walker to open, it was going to be more likely Walker who would need to shake the winter rust off. And so it would prove with Adamson taking three early wickets with his inswingers which had been perfected during winter nets with the coaching support Bengeo had received this year.
A change at the football field end after Adamson's fifth over, it was debateable whether the skipper was looking to prolong the game or give someone else a try.
Walker continued to toil at the other end with the home batsman starting to get their eye in. Vicky Fishburn would be the replacement, on loan from County hall for the day and looking a tad out of rhythm, the home side capitalised on this.
Tom & Phil were the busy fielders during this spell, no necessarily because they were moving around, but more likely because the current batsmen had a limited number of strokes!
Walker would be rewarded before the end of his spell, the rust definately coming off towards the end of the spell.
Morris to replace Walker after eventually turning up 1/2 an hour late & soon found his reliable line. As to had Fishburn, the run rate slowed down.
Morris too was rewarded with a well earned wicket, Fishburn being replaced without any return after completing her allotted overs.
Sam Draper was given 3 overs by skipper Ruskin, however it was probably 2 & 1/2 too many, the run rate rocketed as the home batsmen too full advantage of the change, it was only when Draper started pitching the ball, greater control was gained still 40 runs plundered.
Robinson & Ruskin bowled in tandem, but the home batsmen had got their eye in. Robinson took a wicket before Adamson was brought back on to wrap up the first 1/3 of the game, 2 more wickets & his first (hopefully of many) 5fa of the season. Bengeo were set a target of 200 to win.
The innings was divided by a fine DIY tea, a great way to start of 2013.
Seeley & Underdown to open the innings & the home side missed a very early opportunity dropping Seeley 1st ball & the ball whistled through the slips for 4. The scorboard tickled over nicely with Seeley & Underdown moving quickly between the wickets at any opportunity, the home side fielding on occasions provides more than they should. Seeley again offered another chance this time high through point but again was dropped. He was finally bowled for 36 after a change in bowling; Bengeo 57 for 1 off 13, Seeley; 36. Robinson in at 3, not hanging about as normal, his hard hitting brought him a swift 26 but was caught. Robinson's entrance had slowed Underdown some what and the entrance of Baker would see little change. The score continued to tickle along, but the urgency from the start of the innings had disappeared. Baker looked more confident than he had all winter at Nets (possibly because he didn't need to listen to the coach & bat at the same time today) and scored freely. But again reached 26 before being dismissed.
Ruskin to the wicket, the home side seemed to remember him from previously visits (possibly because of how much tea he ate?) and soon reminded them how hard he can hit the ball.
Quietly at the other end Underdown continued to nurdle away. After Ruskin had biffed a couple of Boundaries, there was a ripple of applause not for the skipper but Underdown had reached a thoroughly deserved half century. The celebrations didn't last long as he was dismissed soon after without adding any further score.
Adamson the 5 wicket hero back to the crease although he would spend more time out thee than most due to 2 umpiring stints! Ruskin was intent in closing the game off before the final overs & hit a couple of maximums, Adamson couldn't keep up & was dismissed cheaply. Walker to the wicket & would see the game out with Ruskin with 3 overs to spare.
A deserved 5 wicket win for Bengeo, no fixture yet next week let's see what the all rounder (groundsman, fixture sec., team sec., vive vice captain) could sort out during the week.
